The City of Mason Manta Rays competitive swim team emphasizes the importance of academic excellence and character development. Aligning with a culture of wellness, the swim team will host free community swim clinics to highlight the importance of water safety and to provide instruction for swimming.

What is Open Water Course: Teaches you the foundation and skills you need to become a competent diver. You will acquire a wealth of both theory and practical knowledge to dive safely and securely. Certification is up to 60 feet and is valid for life.

Check-Out Dive - The sections that will be completed in our program is, 1) the classroom/online learning and the 2) in-water learning sessions. Our course does NOT include the “check-out dive.” To complete their full PADI Open Water Scuba Certification they need to complete their “check-out” dive on their own. The fees associated with this course does NOT include the “check-out” dive fees. This is true if they were to take the course directly with Cincy Scuba at their dive shop. Cincy Scuba is happy to help in scheduling their check-out dive.

Personal Dive Gear: Personal dive gear you will need for the course: a mask, dive boots, fins, and snorkel. You will need to purchase these prior to class. This is true if they were to take the course directly with Cincy Scuba at their dive shop.



The PADI Open Water Certification is divided into three steps, so students develop skills in a progressive and enjoyable fashion.
Step 1 (Online/classroom Learning): E-Learning is completed through PADI’s website. You can complete the e-learning progressively over a span of 5-8 hours. All students must complete e-learning prior to the first day in the pool.

Step 2 (In water at MCC): Skills are divided into small chunks to make it easy for anyone to learn scuba. The pool lessons will be fun. You will be surprised at how quickly you can learn to dive!

Step 3 (Two Days at Gilboa Quarry or Your Chosen Vacation Destination): This is the final step in the certification process. You may complete this at Gilboa Quarry over two days or you can complete this final step in the certification process by completing these “checkout dives” on vacation.
This step three must be completed within one year of your pool dives. Your PADI Instructor will help you schedule your checkout dives in Ohio or refer you to a PADI dive shop close to your chosen vacation destination.

Reminder: “check-out” dive and the fees associated with this dive are NOT included in this class. Check-out dive may be scheduled with Cincy Scuba or another certification company on your own.


Class Schedule
Classroom sessions are on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-8:30pm.
In-water sessions are on Sunday mornings from 9:00am12:00pm.
The first week will only be Tuesday class session. Sunday in-water sessions begin the second week. All classes and in-water is held here at the Mason Community Center. Attendance at all classrooms and in-water sessions is crucial.

Students must be comfortable in a group class setting without parents. They will learn to put their faces in the water and blow nose bubbles while completing ten relaxed bobs. Ages 3-5

Students will build on the skills learned in Station 1 and add on gliding on their front and back in streamline position and rolling from front to back float.

Students will enhance his or her skills by learning proper kicking and combining it with their breath control and streamlining skills.

Students will learn slide glide kick with breath and the front crawl stroke while continuing to practice skills learned in previous stations.

Students will add on to the techniques acquired in previous stations, begin learning proper freestyle stroke by combining the skills mastered in station 4, and will learn backstroke.

Station 7/8 focuses on advanced elements and stroke efficiency in all four strokes including breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke, and freestyle. Please note, that a pair of long swim fins (with non-adjustable backs) is recommended for all upper-level swimmers.

Beginner adults with little or no experience in the water will work on various skills and techniques to achieve the goal of water acclimation, submersion, and floating one the front and the back.

This parent/child class is designed to teach you to work safely in the water with your child, aged 6-18 months. Skills will be taught at an introductory level, including pool safety, water acclimation, floating and gliding with support, submerging, and blowing bubbles through the mouth and/or nose.

Students will build strength and endurance in every stroke through drills, multiple laps, and on-deck coaching from a certified coach. Station 9/10 allows swimmers to get the feeling of being on a swim team without the competition.
